here's the gist on illyria after the end of season 5:

With Los Angeles plunged into a hell dimension, Illyria loses controls over her abilities and identity. Fluctuations in her power cause her to regularly change form into Winifred Burkle, leaving her vulnerable to the rampant evil. Spike takes to protecting her, doing all he can to prevent her from reverting to Fred. A psychic determined that these human manifestations were not remnants of Fred's soul, merely Illyria's attempt to become or feel more human.
After a short time as demon lord of Beverly Hills, her condition worsens until her identity becomes completely unstable in the presence of Wesley Wyndam-Pryce's ghost. While wounded in this state, she reverts to her original form of old one, colossal and monstrous. Driven mad with frustration, Illyria rampages through Los Angeles, intent on destroying time itself and all of existence along with it. To halt her, Betta George telepathically implants within her mind both Wesley's and Spike's beloved memories of Winifred Burkle. Though Illyria is then killed, she is returned to life (in the Burkle vessel) when time is rewound to before the fall.
Thereafter, Illyria takes up occupancy in Fred's former apartment, as does Charles Gunn, as both try to determine who they are and what their purpose is in the world now. Illyria continues to struggle with her vacillating humanity and can still reel against it even as she's become curious what it holds for her.
